The Poncho and Its Many Uses
The Poncho as supplied to the forces makes a good "rubber" blanket for a ground sheet, useful in many ways as a blanket, a wrap, a cushion, a bag, a sail, etc. Etc. There is a slit in the middle, covered by a hood. In case of rain slip the poncho over your head and you are protected. It is very light. Carry one nearby with you at all times, even if you are off but for a few hours.
The Poncho is used by every forces force in the world so if that doesn't convince you to pay a few dollars at your local government surplus store then nothing will.
Poncho
I cannot recommend highly adequate the use of the forces Poncho. It is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment ever invented.... If it's good adequate for the army, it's good adequate for our camping needs.
If on your own the Poncho will make an excellent one man protection (bivi) by simply attaching one end to a tree or hedge and fastening the other end to the ground using forked sticks as tent pins. This only needs to be made high adequate for you to enter and sleep under. Even the sides can be fastened to the ground for wind safety making a very snug sleeping area.
Just like your cell phone, you never know when you may need your Poncho. It protects you from sudden changes in the weather. If overheated, it is suitable as a wrap. If you are chilly put it nearby you, keeping it tight at the throat, and you will soon be warm, for, thin and light as it is, it is air proof as well as water-proof. If fatigued from overexertion, throw it on the ground, and lie down flat on your back.
(Five minutes flat on your back is of more rest to the body than an hour in any other position. When you are resting make a business of it. Throw all care and worry, of whether home or camp life, off your mind. Do nothing, say nothing, think nothing, be nothing. Just relax and recuperate.)
To make a poncho tent for two or three people, cut two stakes of suitable length, with a crotch at one end to hold the ridge pole; cut your ridge-pole and some small stakes or pins.
You will find abundance of suitable material at hand. Drive your two stakes the length of your poncho apart, and place your ridge-pole in position, which should be a little less in height than the width of a poncho. String two ponchos together by means of the eyelet holes. Throw them over your ridge-pole hood side out and fasten tightly by the pins and small pieces of string run straight through the eyelet holes at the side. A third poncho protects one end; the other end is left open for air and light. This seems very narrow quarters, but they will sleep two comfortably, and have been known, by a very little change, to adapt three.
This uncomplicated tent has the advantage of water-proof sides, is very light, and being in pieces, is unmistakably carried, and can be made and put up inside of twenty minutes.
There is much gained by placing two logs parallel to each other and setting your poncho tent upon them. This gives far more space than appears at first sight.
If you cannot find logs, use small trees, large stones and earth combined.
Select a cheerful and dry spot for pitching your tent. Select even ground and slightly sloping. If you expect to remain in camp any length of time, dig, or cut with a hatchet, a small trench nearby your tent. This will forestall the water from higher ground nearby you running into your enclosure. If the trees are too thick, make an chance so as to let in the sunshine. Do not thoughtlessly cut down more trees than necessary, and in most cases it will be found easier to find a sufficiently open spot, than to endeavor to make one. Camp as near to a spring or running water as you can, even if you are on a lake shore as running water is cleaner than that from a standing source.
Remember that if you always carry a Poncho you will avoid the job of making a protection for the night, avoid getting soaked in a sudden downpour, avoid sleeping on wet ground and avoid sitting in the rain at your camp fire.

The True Origin of the Baja Hoodie
An assumption exists that the Baja Hoodie, also known as the Mexican Hoodie, Mexican Jacket, or Mexican Pullover, originated from Mexico because of the abundant contribute and range of the product in towns and cities along the U.S.-Mexican border. Vendors in these areas use the stereotypical image to market their products towards tourists. Hypothetically, an indecisive tourist at the end of vacating to Mexico wants to purchase a souvenir to symbolize the culture, diversity, and foreign lands, and will often settle on a serape blanket or Baja Hoodie. And so the misperception is perpetuated that the baja hoodie represents Mexico and all it stands for.
Perhaps the misguidance is in the name. The word baja may recommend that the location of origin is Baja, Mexico. In reality, baja is a illustrated word for the material of the jacket. Baja is a synonym for someone else Spanish word, franela, whose literal translation to English is flannel, suggesting the characteristic multicolored, crossed-patterned designs. Franela more traditionally means fine-twined wool or cotton. Therefore, the word baja describes the nature of the fabric and attractive design of the jacket not the location.
Poncho
Why is the Baja Hoodie then sold in Mexico? The truth is, the baja jacket did make its way through Mexico but it did not create there. Its origins can be traced to the indigenous habitancy of Central and South America. It is a derivative or fashion ancestor to the poncho.
An indigenous group in Southern Chile, for example, called the Mapuche can be linked to the advent of the poncho. The poncho garners a rectangular shape with a hole in the center for the head of the wearer. The Mapuche found practical use of the poncho as the simplistic design served a protective function in windy and rainy climates by reducing exposure to the elements in that region. Some of the oldest archeological finds of textiles or fabrics with involved designs and patterns were found in cemetery sites in Chile and Argentina in 1300 Ad, in areas where the Mapuche thrived.
Camel hair was the original material used to create the weaves to make the fabric. Later, colonizing Europeans introduced sheep to the natives. The indigenous habitancy began breeding sheep and weaving their thicker wool into the material to assemble the poncho. Wool and cotton became the beloved material and characteristically defined the poncho as warm and durable.
The simplicity and practicality of the poncho magnified its popularity and use throughout the region. As it spread geographically it plainly evolved into any useful variations of protective jackets, including what we now know as the Baja Hoodie which dawns an accessory hood and sleeves with a front pouch. Maybe the evolution of the poncho to the hoodie parallels the invention of our modern Snuggie, a blanket with sleeves. Conceivably, man thought, "wouldn't it be nice if I could keep this warm thing on and have great use of my hands?" What wasn't lost in translation or evolution was the very thing that describes it in its name, the significance of the material. And that's why there is still a examine for Baja Hoodies today, because they're woven with material to be durable, comfortable, and warm while still maintaining what made their relatives simplistic and practical so many years ago.

Otavalo - Meet the World's Largest and Most Colorful Indigenous market
It is early morning in Otavalo, where the world's largest and most colorful Indigenous market takes place. It all begins at dawn, when the first costumers arrive attracted by the food and the animals for sale. This market dates back to pre-Inca times and it is a veritable range of animals to eat and buy that mingles with the sound of the Andean pipes and the Quichua, the native indigenous language.
By 9am, the performance takes place at the hundreds of handicraft booths spread all along the main streets. The center of the performance is the "Poncho Plaza", where approximately any craft item produced in Ecuador can be found at undoubtedly cheap prices.

The tiny stalls offer a bewildering and involving array of local handicrafts, with textiles of superior rainbow colors predominating. Naturally, you will also find there the sublime Panama hats -originally made in Ecuador- at half the price or less than what you would pay in Quito, the capital. The range of colors of the assorted fabric products, the blankets, ponchos, balsa wood bowls and carvings, as well as the range of fruit and vegetables on sale is a feast for the eyes in this involving market where haggling for lower prices is anticipated and part of the fun.
The market is safe and tourists are all the time welcomed by the friendly local people, the Otavaleño indigenous. People can't help but be delighted by the dignified Otavaleño ladies who still wear their distinctive former dress of intricately embroidered white blouses with flounced lace sleeves, their black skirts and their long, braided hair often decorated with colorful ribbons.
