The firm of Umbrellas - Over 10 Unusual Uses Which You May Never Have Considered!

At the end of my old description on who invented the humble umbrella nearly 2,500 years ago, I mentioned that there were more than 10 very separate and lively uses for this astonishing gadget. Most population own an umbrella either they work from home, are in the corporate world or do not work at all but they only think of it as a formula of keeping dry when it rains. Over the globe, umbrellas have a multitude of company and public uses as summarised below.

As an fastener of rank or 'status symbol'
Throughout the East the umbrella was the fastener of one of the insignia of royalty or high rank. There are rock sculptures, believed to be over twelve centuries old, showing deer-hunts at which a king looks on, seated on a horse with an attendant keeping an umbrella over his head. There are also any appearances of 'umbrellas' in sculptures, e.g., bas-reliefs showing kings in their chariots with attendants keeping parasols over their heads. They were reserved exclusively for the monarch. In China the umbrella originated in standards and banners. In Egypt it was used as a mark of divergence and an embellishment held over the figure of a god carried in procession. In the Basilican churches of Rome, cardinals had umbrellas carried over their heads while processions and formed part of the regalia. (It is inherent that the cardinal's hat may be derived from the umbrella)

Poncho

For security from the sun
Umbrellas used for security against the scorching heat of the sun are normally made from cotton or silk. Beach umbrellas/parasols are specially designed to cut exposure to the sun's Uv rays and heat.

To help with balance
The 'longer' umbrella is often used as a walking stick to assist with equilibrium and momentum. This is not restricted to population with a disability, but to anything who finds it useful to hire a 'third leg' when walking.

To contain leaks
In hot countries umbrellas are often hung from 'hanging baskets' to preclude water from leaking all over the floor when the plants within the baskets have been watered.

As a Poncho
Fabric from an old umbrella can be utilised to make ponchos. All of the metal pieces are removed and a hole is cut where the head would be.

As a clothes-drier
If the umbrella fabric is old but the metal spokes are still intact, the fabric can be removed and the metal frame hung in a laundry room or hooked over the tie-bar of a conservatory as a 'skeleton' to dry clothing.

As a prop for Photographers
The umbrella is a great and thrifty lighting tool that is quick, suitable and easy to use. It can be used either one works from home or on site, taking up miniature space when photographing in cramped quarters. It is an asset when photographing subjects in inclement weather or, with its reflective inside, as a diffusion gismo when using artificial lighting. It helps control divergence and 'open up' shadows.

For protecting ice from melting too fast
In 1883 a bartender modified the use of parasols by adopting the invent for covering drinks at a Grand Hotel. The invent helped to preclude ice from melting too fast in drinks.

As a Paparazzi Shield
Many celebrities use an umbrella for giving themselves some privacy from the Paparazzi.

To transport articles
Umbrellas are still used (particularly in the Far East) in the small home company and larger company settings to transport items such as groceries, construction materials, etc., from lower to higher levels (and vice versa) of buildings.

As a weapon
The 'Bulgarian umbrella' was bought in Washington D.C., modified in Moscow and used in London. It had a inexpressive pneumatic mechanism which shot out small poisonous pellets. There are also reports of its use as a weapon in aged Sparta.

Current innovations
The company opening for innovative umbrellas has taken off in the last few years. There are now umbrellas that do not invert in very windy conditions, 'talking' umbrellas that will tell you the weather forecast, 'hands free' umbrellas, umbrellas that will not drip water on the floor when collapsed and clear 'bubble' umbrellas which allow for greater vision while keeping you dry.

The humble umbrella has lasted 2,500 years. It will be lively to see how it develops over the arrival years in the company and public sectors.
