When bugging out under the spectacular, starry nighttime sky we all have to make a choice. Do we retire for the evening in our sleeping bags or use blankets to fend off the cold? If the weather is slightly cool you may opt for the added insulation of the age old bedroll. It's a known fact that loosely woven materials tend to generate air pockets which can effectively keep you warm. Hobo's traditionally take some crumbled up pieces of newspaper and stuff them in their coats to generate just such an outcome. This effect is particularly noticeable with the afghan which my wife has amiable made for me. You can place it over your head and see straight through the small openings knitted into it but the thing is the best type of blanket one could ever find. There's no cold evenings when I place this afghan nearby me.

Always air out your sleeping material the following day as you would be surprised at the whole of moisture lost during the night. This can quickly turn to an undesirable odor if left alone. There is currently a trend towards using bedrolls created with nylon shells accented with a warm wool blanket but unfortunately the blanket tends to slip and slide on the nylon. What this means to you is that in order to contend a warm environment it will be valuable to place additional blankets on the bottom of your bedroll. I would recommend a 3 to 1 ratio, where there are three blankets on the bottom for every one on top. Once again newspaper can furnish you with some of those extra "blankets" if you so desire.

* Now beginning with the last blanket which you have put down and fold the blankets, alternating them in a reverse order until such time as they are all in the middle. Ultimately pin the blanket at bottom to hold them securely in place.

When you are ready to leave the following day you can place your toilet articles inside the bedroll and start actually rolling it up. Tie a rope nearby it to hold it together. When making your own bedroll you can use some of your older blankets. It is a waste of money to purchase new blankets to make one.
